The Department of Electronics, Cochin University of Science and Technology, was started in 1975 and is envisaged as Post Graduate Department with Master Degree (M.Sc. & M.Tech) and Ph.D. Programme in frontier areas in Electronics. The courses offered in this Department are unique in the sense that the students spent their last Semester(s) in Industries and R & D Institutions.
Since 1983, the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) and University Grants Commission (UGC) extends financial support to the academic programme of this Department. Apart from this, three Centres of advanced training namely, Centre for Research in Electromagnetics and Antennas (CREMA), Centre for Ocean Electronics (CENTOL), and Centre for Research in Microprocessor Applications (CRMA) have been started in the Department with financial support from Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India and University Grants Commission (UGC).
The M.Tech. Programme in the Department is approved by AICTE and all the students (20) admitted are awarded GATE fellowship, if they are qualified. The M.Sc. Programme is sponsored by the UGC and the Department of Electronics, Government of India.
In 1988, the University Grants Commission has sanctioned COSIST assistance of Rs.57.85 Lakhs to the Department for the development of postgraduate education and research in the areas of Microprocessor applications and Microwave antennas. In 1994, the Department was selected by UGC under the Special Assistance Programme at the Departmental Research Support level in the thrust area of Ocean Electronics with a financial assistance of Rs.70.75 lakhs for a period of 5 years.
The qualifications and expertise of the faculty members of the Department are apt for conducting research in the active areas of electronics such as Antennas, Digital Signal Processing, Instrumentation, Microprocessors, Microwave Materials Characterization audio and image processing and related fields, and Underwater Acoustics / Ocean Electronics. The Department has also undertaking several research projects from various Government and private agencies. For the last five years, it has received Rs.135 lakhs for implementing various research and development projects in the Department.
Further, the Department conducts two biennial National Symposia in the areas of Antennas & Propagation (APSYM) and Ocean Electronics (SYMPOL), effective from 1988.
The technical biasing of the University, spectacular growth of electronics industries in Kerala and the location of the University in the Industrial belt of the state are all favourable aspects of hope of substantial development of this Department.
